In
the Nepali Kitchen

I
hang out in the kitchen a lot, because that is where
you learn the
most about Nepal culture. And, in the Annapurnas and
everywhere else
in the Himalayas when it's cold, it's the only place
that is warm. The stove
is earthen, with wood or yak dung for fuel. The plates
and bowls are shiny
steel metal, and also what looks to me like brass. The
thermos bottles in the
upper left are used all over because hot water can be
saved most of the
day without having to use fuel to heat more. And a kettle
of water is always
on any fire that is going. The woman in the photo is
of Tibetan extraction,
perhaps from far back, but you can still see it once
you learn the look.
